Mansion PSX.
I have downloaded and installed prboom for Linux and it is running very well. I have installed the TNT, Plutonia and Doom2 Iwads and it is running very well. I have recorded another demo for Plutonia, MAP21 UV in 3:36, this should

be compatible with the DOS version of BOOM and I will be posting it to my files page soon. This is a very cool demo on a very cool level. Prboom on Linux seems to load much faster than the equivalent running on Windows. I put the IWADS into
/usr/X11R6/share/games/doom and you use the
-iwad parameter to choose which one to use. Very simple to use, all screenshots are saved into your home folder. As well as any demos you record. To play them back you just type
prboom -playdemo foo for example, and the game will find it easily.
I am currently experimenting with dosemu and I am hoping to get DCK 3.62 running on Linux. This way I could run the Doom editor in a window on the KDE desktop and then run prboom to test the map. Very good with multitasking linux is, much better than Windows 2000,XP.

Now all I want to get working is the Zdoom 2.0.91 source code. This is something I really want to do. After seeing the screenshots on the
website. I think it cannot be that hard to do.
I have just downloaded the PSX Levels from the Idgames page on Doomworld and I have played the PSX 'Twilight Descends' level. I will be playing this map more now I have the PC version. Looks very good in Prboom at 640*480. Would look extremely good if you ran it in Jdoom @1600*1200:=). It looks better than it does on the PSX even with the colored lighting and all. And it is good to be able to save your game halfway through the level. But at least PSX Doom has the password options for saving your progress, even though you were using a $240 console with 2 Memory card slots and you still had to use a pen & paper to save your place! I once had a notebook for my PSX Doom sessions with about 200 passwords in it. I wish I had kept it now, I would post them to my website. Oh, well I might get another PSX and a copy of the game and find some more passwords to post. Unless there is a good PSX emulator for Linux that I could use.
Playing this with a PSX controller is too restricting. If there is a way to use the PC mouse in PSX games that would be very good indeed, I know that the PSX Final Doom game had support for the PSX mouse, there should be some way to apply this to the PSX emulator. I would love to be able to use my USB optical mouse in a PSX game.
The other good memories I have of PSX Doom is the excellent musical score. Especially the Music for 'Phobos Lab' and 'Hell Gate'. Sometimes I would put the game on with the sfx down low and just listen to the music.
The screenshot to the left shows a Shotgunner getting slaughtered by my Shotgun. He did not know what hit him. But there are some Caco's that will not be very happy to see me. This is my favourite area from the PSX version of this level.
I just wish that Zdoom could use 16bit color just like the PSX version of Doom seemed to, the levels had colored lighting that looked much better than what we see in the PC Zdoom levels in software mode. If we could have a source port specifically to run a console megawad that could have the animated skies just like PSX Doom then I would be the first to download it.

At least there are people willing to convert the levels from PSX to PC. I cannot wait for the Console Megawad to be released so I can play through the maps in the order they were placed in the PSX game.
You could use Jdoom to build a source port to run the Megawad, as this would make the game look better than the PSX version which I think ran about 512*384 if I remember correctly.
For those who are interested the
/abin folder on the PSX Doom cd contains a psxdoom.wad file containing the game textures and resources used by PSX Doom. If you merge this into another Wadfile or Pwad you can then view the resources and/or use them . The resources will not display properly if you view the graphics in Wintex itself but there should be a way to view them with another editor. If you search around the Doomworld forums, you should find some more information about this subject.
A quick post, I have found a trick jump in the PSX Mansion level! If you run towards the pillars at just the right angle, you can jump over them and then you press on the blue keyed door from the opposite side and the pillars will lower.

this is a very good move, you can skip a whole section of the map this way. Especially good for those who are speedrunners. You end up bypassing the Blue key door and getting into the next part of the map.
I discovered this by accident playing the level in prboom on my Mandrake Linux 10.0 box.
Very cool isn't it. I never tried this in the PSX version, and I was trick jumping in that game. But most of my trickjumping was in the PSX Doom version of Gate to Limbo. Now that is the coolest map to do this in. I would try this to do a speedrun of this level if I was you. Makes the whole process much easier if you can skip a section of the map and get to the good parts sooner. Maybe there are more exploits in these maps, I will have to have a look at other parts of this map and try to find some more trick jumps. Maybe there are some in the PSX Twilight Descends map as well, we will have to see. If only there was a way to skip the teleporter puzzle in the Mansion, I hate that puzzle with a vengeance. Get's easier with practice but I still hate it.
Anyway, I have found a trick jump which will be useful to the speedrunning community so why not get out there and use it to make some cool demos. I would love to see them. Especially if they are for prboom.
I have recently bought Doom3 and I also got the Doom Collectors Ed, which includes: The Ultimate Doom, Doom2 And Final Doom TNT & Plutonia although sadly the Master Levels were not included. Am I missing anything or not? The Master Levels maps in PSX Doom were very cool especially
'Vesperas' which is my favorite level. I guess I could get them off E-Bay or some other place that sells old games. Although seeing some user made levels from 1995 I have played recently, I hope the Master Levels are better than them. I am playing Ultimate Doom and I am loving the levels in this great game. The level
'Gate To Limbo' is my favourite
level of all time, I have found out how to do a trick jump from the platform opposite the Yellow Key platform to the Yellow Key and then jumping over to the platform with the Energy Cells. Two trick jumps in one area, talk about a good level.
Nothing to complain about with Doom 3 though, I am sure anyone will agree with me on that point. Feels great to be on Mars instead of Phobos... Much higher gravity you see. Phobos is just a captured Asteroid to tell the truth, why anyone would build a base on it is incomprehensible, the UAC sure are keen. why not build a base on Mars like Doom3, or on the Moon's of Jupiter.
Here is a screenshot of the Mansion Teleporter puzzle. This can be annoying when you are low on health, but it is the only way to finish the level.

At least you can see where you have been once you have got at least half way around the puzzle. I am very proud of the good work the various authors of the levels for bringing the quality PSX maps to the PC platform at last. This is where they belong, Doom was born on the PC after all, lest the PSX fiends forget that.
I used to buy PSX mags, I know how they feel about the 'Beige Box Brigade'. But we have Linux and Zdoom and not to forget Jdoom, which shits on anything the PS2 can produce graphics-wise. Running at 1280*1024 it is awesome! We just want to get the PSX maps onto the PC so we can speedrun the maps and find even more trickjumps.

This final screenshot is a graphic showing the prboom automap after solving the teleporter puzzle. North is to the top of the picture. Now you can see the path you need to take to complete this in a hurry. Because this would be frustrating if you are speedrunning would'nt it?
There is a demo
here, this demo is for prboom-2.2.3-1386 and shows the trickjump in detail as well as some tense gameplay. So get this demo and get speedrunning. I hope to see more people using this trickjump to cut down their demo times. I know I will be recording some UV demos on this map, I cannot wait to finally complete this challenge. If I can beat Plutonia MAP21 in UV, I can do this.
I have also completed another demo,
here, This demo is the PSX Threshold of Pain map completed in Ultraviolence mode. I did this demo in 8:05 which is a pretty good time I think. Try and beat that!
